Why Steering Wheels Need Regular Care
Steering wheels are among the most heavily used leather surfaces. Daily contact with moisture, sunlight, creams, and skin oils leads to wear, greasiness, colour loss, and in some cases cracking. Leather is naturally open-pored, allowing these substances to penetrate over time. This causes the leather to become brittle, softens the colour layer, and results in rubbing or peeling.
This repair set is designed to effectively address these issues. The improved, solvent-free formulations make the products gentle yet highly effective, suitable for refreshing colour, degreasing, protecting, and conditioning.
Function of Each Product
-
Leather Cleaner Mild: Removes everyday dirt and prevents long-term damage.
-
Degreaser: Eliminates excess oils and sweat contamination without harsh solvents.
-
Leather Fresh (Black): Revives the original colour, covers abrasions, and restores an even appearance.
-
Leather Shield: Protects the surface from new wear, dirt, and abrasion after recolouring.
-
Elephant Leather Preserver: Provides nourishment and a natural sheen. Primarily recommended for older or very dry steering wheels.
Application Instructions
1. Preparation
Mask off areas of the steering wheel that should not be treated.
2. Cleaning
Apply Leather Cleaner Mild to an included sponge and clean the leather thoroughly.
3. Degreasing
Put a small amount of Degreaser onto a cloth and wipe the entire surface to remove sweat and oils.
4. Smoothing
Use the sanding pad to smooth rough patches, scratches, or lifted edges. Remove sanding dust with a cloth.
5. Colour Refreshing
Dab Leather Fresh Black onto a sponge and apply in thin, even layers, ideally in circular motions.
Allow to dry naturally or speed up drying with a cold hairdryer. Repeat if needed.
6. Conditioning (Optional for new wheels)
After 24 hours, apply a thin layer of Elephant Leather Preserver. This nourishes the leather and restores a natural sheen—especially beneficial for older steering wheels.
7. Protection
After another 24 hours, apply Leather Shield with a soft cloth. This final step safeguards the freshly restored surface against abrasion and new dirt.
